Spirituality from the 13th Century

No wonder we can’t get a clear listing of Rumi’s writings! He lived over 800 years ago.

Philanthropy from the Ancients

Rumi was a famous Persian poet and mystic. He has several quotes about charity and giving. One such quote is:

“Give your weakness to one who helps.”

This quote emphasizes giving to those in need. It also emphasizes seeking help from those who are willing to help.

The concept of giving to those in need has deep roots in human civilization. Throughout history, individuals, communities, and societies engaged in acts of charity and philanthropy. They supported various causes, alleviated suffering, and improved the well-being of others. Ancient civilizations, religious institutions, and cultural traditions helped shape philanthropic practices.

Modern philanthropy started in the late 19th century. It had organized charities and foundations. Industrialization, wealth accumulation, and social reforms led to the establishment of philanthropic organizations. They addressed social issues such as poverty, education, healthcare, and human rights.

As for whether people are more helpful to the poor and hungry today than in the past, it’s a complex question with no simple answer. There have been significant advancements in humanitarian aid, social welfare programs, and international development efforts. These have helped ease poverty and hunger for millions of people around the world. Yet, poverty and hunger persist. Many challenges and barriers block universal access to food, shelter, and healthcare.

Although progress has been made in addressing poverty and hunger, we still have much work to do. The commitment to philanthropy and charitable giving remains essential in tackling these pressing issues. We need to build a more compassionate society.
